What is the tithe?
“Tithe” literally means tenth or 10%. Although the tithe was part of the law of Moses (Leviticus 27:30-34), the original tithe was given by Abraham long before that law was set in place (Genesis 14:19-20).
Abraham gave a tithe to Melchizidek in response to the blessing of God on his life. Jacob too, tithed before there ever was a law to tithe, in response to a dream he had (Genesis 28:20-22).
Why tithe?
Jesus said the top competitor for our commitment to Him would be greed and the love of money (Matthew 6:24). Greed creates separation of relationships, with both God and others. To counteract this, God asks us to give a portion of our income, called a tithe, to Him. When we tithe through the local church, we prioritize God in our lives, tackle greed, and open ourselves to His blessings.
BEYOND
YOUR
TITHE
This is anything you give above 10 %. The Bible encourages us to give offerings beyond our tithe to specific projects at our local church and causes that we personally believe in. (Amos 4:4-5). Offerings are your opportunity for generosity.
